“You sound like a white girl!” “You talk too proper!” Have you ever been told you talk white? Well I have and too many times. I recently made a drastic change when I moved from Minnesota to Mississippi for school. To say it was a culture shock would be an understatement. I knew that everyone would talk differently from me because of their “southern drawls” but I didn’t expect to be criticized for being too proper and being called a white girl. And since when did speaking proper become a “white” thing and a badge of shame for blacks? Seems a little backwards to me!
Check out this spoken word piece which relates to this idea, she was speaking the truth!
